America has never seen anything to match the innovation, energy, romance, and excitement of the 20th Century. And the embodiment of all this is Eve Solomon, a young woman who embraces the vitality of the times with a fervor. Determined to make a name for herself in the fledgling music business of 1908, she ultimately becomes wildly successful. But the same steely determination that takes her to the heights of the entertainment world cannot bring her the one thing she wants more than anything: the love of her life, Alex Getz, a struggling Vaudeville comic who becomes one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. As their careers and lives intersect across the years, there is a price to pay—a royalty for true love that can never be measured.

Three little words.

That’s all they were, but every time she heard him say them, they had the same impact.

“Marry me, Eve,” came the voice through the phone.

“Alex, how many times have I heard that from you?” Eve paused to catch her breath. Though almost eighty-five, her bright eyes and delicate face made her look much younger.

“I don’t know how much time I’ve got left, but I want to spend it with you,” Alex said.

Eve sat alone on a couch in the living room of her rambling Beverly Hills home, trying to comprehend what she was hearing. She remembered all the times Alex had proposed, always to have something, usually another woman, get in the way. Hurt at the memory, her thoughts turned to the current Mrs. Getz, his curvaceous thirty-five-year-old former secretary. It had only been five years since they were married.

“Where’s Marcie?” Eve asked, guessing she had probably walked out on him, like the previous three wives. Eve wondered if she’d kept her sanity, something not one of the others managed during their stormy marriages to Alex.

“She’s dead.” He paused and then continued. “I shot the bitch ten minutes ago.”

Syeesha Green’s miserable luck has finally changed. Not only has she landed a good job as a personal assistant to a high-profile socialite, but she has a new romance with her handsome law school classmate, Christian Chambers. Life couldn’t be better. Jade McCann knew the second she laid eyes on Syeesha that the young woman would be the perfect employee. Broke, beautiful, and naive, she was just the kind of woman Jade needed to carry out her plan. Now all Jade needs to do is convince Syeesha to seduce her husband so they can both score a lucrative pay day. When Syeesha discovers why she was really hired, will she sacrifice her new romance--and her dignity--to secure a fortune? Or has she learned some tricks from her cunning new boss to keep her character, her cash, and her man?

Syeesha smiled. “We haven’t discussed pay.”

Jade leaned back in her chair. “Of course. The position pays between thirty and thirty-five. How much are you making now?” “I’m sorry, but Ray said...” Syeesha paused.

Jade followed her eyes to the glint from her ring bouncing off the silver service tray and casting another rainbow. She’s uncomfortable talking about money, Jade thought. Especially with someone who appears to have so much of it. She’ll just assume when Ray said fifty a year that he was mistaken.

“I’m willing to go high,” Jade said. “Thirty-five annually?”

Syeesha locked her eyes back on Jade’s. “Ray said the job pays between seventy and seventy-five.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I could’ve sworn.” Syeesha frowned. “Pretty sure I don’t remember hearing thirty to thirty-five.”

Jade swallowed hard. “Forty.”

“I’m no good at this whole negotiating thing,” Syeesha said, “but I just think with all the flexibility that I’ll need to have, working for possibly two people instead of one, and all the... assets I bring—you know, education level, professional experience. I think sixty-five is appropriate.”

Jade sucked in a deep, measured breath. If she hadn’t already sifted through three dozen résumés and endured interviews with completely inept candidates, she would’ve called Syeesha’s bluff and told her to hightail it back to East Flatbush. But the girl was as close to perfect as she’d ever find.

“Sixty,” Jade snapped. “And I won’t discuss it further.”

“Listen.” He took her gently by the arm and led her out of the way of the students spilling from other classrooms. “We’ve got a couple of classes together, and I know that you’re really smart. I’d hate to see you fall behind because you’ve got too much pride to join a study group.”

“What makes you think I’m going to fall behind?”

He shrugged, his shoulders moving up and down so slightly that she almost missed it. Looking at him conjured a long-ago memory of a lone Boston terrier that had sat on the sidewalk and seduced her with its sad eyes while she had eaten in an outdoor section of a Mexican restaurant. She was a sucker for puppy-dog eyes.

“Tell you what,” she said. “Let me think about it.”

“If it’ll make you feel better, maybe you and I can study together. Just the two of us.”

Ah, now they were getting to the main objective.

“Christian,” she chided. “Are you asking me out on a date?”

His lips curved into a loose smile, his eyes floating about the corridor before gliding back to her. Was it possible she was having an effect on this guy?
